Retrofits Training Course

BCIT’s Building Science for Retrofits course is underway in Fall 2024. This multi-session online course is offered by BCIT and the First Nations Home EnergySave Program.

The retrofits training course introduces the fundamentals of building science for retrofits and upgrades for homes in rural communities. These include:

  • reducing emissions in homes
  • fundamental building science concepts
  • solutions for residential building retrofits and upgrades
  • strategies to reduce energy usage and improve comfort and building durability.

The course presents multiple case studies from communities in different regions of BC.

Key topics include house-as-a-system; air, water, moisture and heat management; retrofit solutions and programs; culturally appropriate design; and best practices for retrofit, envelope and mechanical upgrades.

Course Sessions

The course is rolling out in five online sessions (3 hours per session), all of which must be attended to successfully complete the course:

  • Wednesday, September 18 (1 pm – 4 pm)
  • Wednesday, October 2 (1 pm – 4 pm)
  • Wednesday, October 16 (1 pm – 4 pm)
  • Wednesday, October 30 (1 pm – 4 pm)
  • Wednesday, November 13 (1 pm – 4 pm)

This course has limited seats. It has been made available at no cost to eligible participants:

  • BC First Nations community housing or energy staff
  • BC First Nations community members and youth who are interested in a career in the housing or energy sectors
  • Contractors currently working for BC First Nations on housing or energy projects
