About FNHES

The High Cost of Heat

Families in BC First Nations communities typically face high home energy costs.

By rough estimates, these costs may be overall double those of other BC families, mainly because of a legacy of poor quality reserve housing and insufficient upgrades. For people living in remote communities, where diesel power is common, the costs may be as much as triple.

Keys to Lower Energy Costs

One key to saving energy is quality home construction. Constructing new homes that meet high quality standards is the best way to prevent heat loss and other problems — and it’s a good investment.

Effective renovation is also important. There are thousands of homes in First Nations communities that need upgrades to make them safe, livable and energy-efficient.

The First Nations Home EnergySave (FNHES) program is here to support communities through learning opportunities.

Through the program, the Fraser Basin Council works with First Nations communities and Indigenous organizations to reduce energy use, share success stories, and build local capacity and economic development.

Vision

Empower First Nations communities in BC to transition towards energy-efficient housing.

Mission

Support peer learning and share success stories among First Nations communities to reduce home energy use and build local capacity.
